What Child Is This?

Pine Ridge Indian Reservation is home to the Oglala Lakota (Sioux) people. It is consistently the poorest area in the United States according to official sources. National statistics suggest that one in seven Indian people on reservations live on less than $2,500 per year; that over 40% of Indian people on reservations live below the poverty line. The unemployment rate on Pine Ridge exceeds 90%. Over 30% of the people are homeless and of those that have homes, 60% are substandard; 20% are without indoor plumbing; 50% have no telecommunications; 16% have no electricity. Many of the people depend on government allotments and rations, that are often delayed, and are barely sufficient to live on. Often there are 15-20 people living in houses with no insulation and limited firewood. Almost every year, Grandmothers and Grandfathers freeze to death in their homes, because no one can come with firewood or food.

What Can YOU Do?

Get Involved! The Raven Dancers are helping to sponsor a gift collection. You can help by donating. We are collecting gifts for boys and girls, ages 2 through age 17. We are also collecting food for elders. Food will be distributed to older members of the People to help make their holidays, and lives, brighter.

What Is Needed?

FOR THE YOUTH:

Non-battery Toys and Games, Books, Pencils, Notebooks, Lunch Boxes, School Supplies, Art Supplies, kids bicycles & tricycles. Coats, Scarves, Gloves, Sweaters, Boots, Socks, Jeans, Shirts, Sweats, Underwear, Blankets, New Sheets & Pillowcases.

FOOD GIFTS FOR ELDERS:

Foodstuffs should include non-perishable items, such as canned goods, dried foods (like mac-n-cheese, rice, flour), coffee & tea, shortening, and other items.

Cash donations will be used to buy items from these lists and help with transportation costs! Please send checks of money orders made out to The Raven Dancers to the following address:
